Dr. Steven Narod is a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Breast Cancer, a full professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, and a senior scientist at Women’s College Research Institute, where he leads the Familial Breast Cancer Research Unit. Dr. Narod is renowned for his resesarch on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, that when mutated, substantially increase a woman’s lifetime risk of breast or ovarian cancer. He also studies various aspects of cancer prevention and screening. With more than 1000 peer-reviewed publications and an h-index of 133, he is the most-cited researcher in the world in the field of breast cancer. In 2012, Dr. Narod was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
Dr. Narod has studied hereditary breast cancer since 1987 at the International Agency in Research in Cancer in Lyon, France with Dr Gilbert Lenoir. He reactivated his career in Canada in 1995 at McGill University under Dr David Rosenblatt working with Dr Patricia Tonin and Dr William Foulkes. He is a co-discoverer of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, and since their discoveries in 1994 and 1995, he has studied the distribution of mutations worldwide. His team has identified founder mutations in the Ashkenazi-Jewish, French-Canadian, and Bahamian populations. His recent research has revealed that one per cent of Jewish women in Ontario carry a BRCA1/2 mutation, and that half of these women are not eligible for provincially-funded genetic testing. Most recently, Dr. Narod’s collaborative research showed that women in Poland with BRCA1 mutations have a 46 percent lower risk of breast cancer than women in North America with the same mutation. Dr. Narod’s seminal discoveries have stemmed from both his laboratory and his database – the largest of its kind – of over 1,000 women. He has advanced cancer genetics around the world through collaboration with experts in over 30 countries in North America, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America. His research has been
Ever since I noticed that I was putting on weight, more than thirty years ago, I became interested in the chemistry of weight gain. Sadly, it became clear that the experts cannot cast any light on this issue, with some expressing a belief in so-called “uncompensated hyperphagia”, while others were pointing out that people were eating less than ever before. Alongside this confusion, experiments with isotope labelled water (hydrogen-2, oxygen-18) clearly showed that people were keeping the same levels of physical exercise while the population was steadily getting heavier. Study after study showed correlations between apparently different diseases without, in my view, adequate explanation. Weight gain occurs alongside bowel dysfunction alongside immune system disease alongside poor mental health but, interestingly, nobody ever seemed to consider the possibility of a single underlying common cause. Of course, the more recent recognition of the vast realm of microbiota living in our guts holds out much promise for a cure, but has one major problem: that people who have undergone a total colectomy and, therefore, no longer possess gut microbiota, do not suffer from any single, specific, microbiota-related deficiency disease...
In deep time, the sequence of evolution was prokaryote – microeukaryote – multicellular life, but this process involved mixed microbial communities, much as still exist inside our guts. While Charles Darwin worked out the rules of natural selection for multicellular creatures, Carl Woese described horizontal gene transfer (HGT) as a key driver of change among the microbes. In NoRCEL, our suggestion is that a sufficiently diverse microbiome uses HGT to transfer antigen information to the immune system of its offspring, be they egg or live-born neonate. This maternal microbial inheritance is the “Achilles Heel” of the system and the loss of diversity by caesarean section delivery, or by biocide poisoning, leads to adult non-communicable disease by failing to properly connect immune system, brain, and gut. It follows that any intervention will be most valuable immediately after birth.
The concept of ingestible sensors is reaching fruition: electronic “pills” capable of sensing the chemical environment within the gut and transmitting to an external detector. The in-situ detection of signalling molecules could be a game-changer, potentially allowing us to identify functions that have been lost over recent decades. In this way, in principle, health could be restored to the world

Amalia Conte, who received his PhD Degree in Food Science and Technology from the University of Foggia, is now working at the University of Foggia as Associate Professor. Her research topic is "food processing and preservation". In particular, she works on active and sustainable packaging systems, shelf life extension and packaging design for perishable products and optimization of food with enhanced health properties through addition of natural valuable compounds, also coming from fruit and vegetable by-products. Her involvement in research projects is very active. The high degree of novelty of the results achieved from her research allowed to deposit various patents and published numerous articles. Maturity, skills and scientific rigor accrued over the years have created the right support for the creation of a spin-off on the development of food products with healthy, high shelf life and high convenient products. She has published over 200 papers on topics related to food science.
Matteo Alessandro Del Nobile, who received his PhD Degree in Polymer Science from the University of Naples “Federico II”, is now working at the University of Foggia as Full Professor. His background is on mass diffusion through polymeric materials and packaging structure design. During the first period of his studies most of the efforts were put forward to determine the relationships existing between physical and chemical structure of polymers and their mass transport properties. The knowledge gained studying mass transport phenomena through polymer has been applied for developing tools intended for packaging structure design. He is now actively working on the development of functional foods as well as on active packaging. Concerning the former, food matrices such as pasta, bread, mozzarella cheese, grounded meat and fish has been used to develop functional foods. He has published over 350 papers on topics related to polymer science and food science
